Let Me Walk You Through The Pedestrian
Ray Bradbury's personal experiences and feelings effected his theme in his story the Pedestrian by his use of tone, character, and plot. The Pedestrian is based off an event that happened to him personally when he went for a walk one night, but was then abruptly stopped and arrested. So when he went home after that night and wrote this story, his style of writing was deeply effected. When he used his tone in the story to convey the hurt in his heart, characterization to show how he viewed the world/the people around him and plot to show how he envisioned the dehumanizing development of society, it shows how personal Bradbury felt to this story.
To begin one noticeable tool used to convey Bradbury's feelings was his use of tone. For example in the dialogue between the police officer and our main character, Leonard Mead, whenever the police officer asked a question, which sounded very blunt and harsh, whatever Mead answered the police officer never found it as reasonable enough answer but instead as "out of the norm". When Bardbury wrote "'Your name?' said the police car in a metallic whisper... 'Leonard Mead,' he said. 'Speak up!' 'Leonard Mead!' 'Business or profession?' 'I guess you'd call me a writer.' 'No profession,' said the police car as if talking to itself". This dialogue shows how Bradbury felt attacked and not taken into account when the police officer encountered him since he wasn't doing anything wrong.
To continue Bradbury furthered his feelings on the situation by conveying his tone through characterization. In the story Leonard Mead started off just as any other pedestrian or citizen just going for an evening stroll as any normal person could do. However by the end of this story he was mistaken for someone who mentally ill or crazy. "'Get in'... 'Now if you had a wife to give you an alibi,' said the iron voice. 'But-' 'Where are you taking me?'... 'To Psychiatric Center for Research on Regressive tendencies'". This brings to light some of the true sadness of this story since what Mead was doing was entirely not a crime or anything to say that you are mentally ill but the police made rash and unjust actions which correlates to how Bradbury must've felt in real life.
Lastly, Bradbury uses plot to further express his feelings in the story but it also foreshadowed his thoughts about what our society would look like in the future. Although when Bradbury wrote this story in 1951 he placed the setting in 2053. In the story when he describes his community it was almost like it was non-existent, the streets empty with the only sight of humanity to be seen through a window where they were watching a screen. This shows how
