F451 Essay

In Fahrenheit 451 we read a story about a fireman in this dystopian world who is trying to figure out who he is and the meaning behind all soon to be existent curiosities. Throughout the storyline of Fahrenheit 451, author Ray Bradbury has told multiple different lessons in multiple different ways, however the main theme of the novel is our developing reality to a dystopian society which Bradbury conveys detailedly through characterization, extended metaphors, and figurative language.
In the beginning of the story the readers are introduced to the main protagonist Montag who lives in this very dystopian society which shows to hold no true human connection anywhere at all. Montag as we learn is a fireman who loves to burn things since in this world firefighters start fires not end them. Montag's first impression seems to be very cold-hearted and robotic as he is a "law abiding" citizen of that society. Until one evening on his way home from work he runs into a teenage girl named Clarisse who turns his whole world upside down. Just for a moment Clarisse captures Montag's attention just enough in order to intrigue Montag into being curious about the world. Everyday the citizens of this dystopian society are so distracted by technology and being in their own blank minds that no one takes the time to wonder why or how and even just wonder to begin with. From this point on readers witness the character development within Montag as he slowly starts to change the ways of his robotic thinking to a curious and humane way of thinking that it really displays the characteristics of that dystopian society compared to how Montag changed when he started acting with compassion.
Furthermore readers get to learn the theme of a dystopian society through extended metaphors. One major extended metaphor used throughout this plot was the image of hands. At the beginning when we are first introduced into the image of hands it is perceived as something that does what it wants almost as if it has a mind of it's own and we have no control over it. This really displays the key points to a dystopian society since in a dystopia the citizens are usually supposed to have no thoughts or questions to challenge authority that everyone moves in a zombie like way throughout life. This characteristic is exactly what Bradbury was trying to convey with the metaphor of the hands as it shows literally how disconnected humans can be within a society if they are mentally brainwashed to think and act one way.
To add Bradbury also conveys the theme of dystopian throughout the F451 novel through using figurative language. In this society Bradbury creates a creature called the Mechanical Hound which is this terrifying mysterious monster that is suppose to be this representation like a dog but one that attacks people and kills them when they find someone who they believe is guilty of some crime. Bradbury really depicts this creature very well as it really scares the characters and the readers who realize the strength the Mechanical Hound has that it saying this creature has been personified would not be enough to fully capture the image of this dystopian creature.
In all this shows how Ray Bradbury really conveyed the theme of dystopian through characterization, extended metaphors, and figurative language as it not only created a storyline but enhanced it in order for readers to truly learn from this book and realize how if we don't change the course of our society that it's on, we might as well end up in the same dystopian society that Bradbury created in Fahrenheit 451.
