It's Complicated

In the storyline of Fahrenheit 451, our main character Montag has to witness his city that he left behind being burn to ashes as bomb are dropped upon it. In that moment Montag has a mixture of reactions as he watches his old city become destroyed by bombs. At first I feel like he was in a stage of shock because he imagined his the people he "cared" for back in that city and imagined their deaths as the bombs grew closer and closer to them to end their unaware life. So even though when Montag first left the city saying he didn't miss anyone there, like his wife Mildred, but when those bombs dropped he cried out for her to run and to get out of there but there was nothing he could do so he felt so helpless. One thing readers did notice was how Montag's perception on this kind of "destruction" has changed. At the beginning Montag enjoyed the destruction he was creating/controlling when he put things to flame but now as he watched his city go down in flames it was a completely different feeling and it was no longer enjoyable but rather he say destruction as it was. When I read this my reaction as the reader to Montag's reaction was also mixed feelings. As Montag's emotions and perceptions were developing so were mine because he was showing more sides of being a dynamic character and I was coming to realization of that with him which I guess means our reactions kind of align. However I also felt very sorry for him because as he is starting to realize what the purpose of his life is, everything he knows is taken away from him in such sad circumstances so I feel a sense of sorry as he has to suffer through such tragic events but hopefully he finds his way through this unknown.
