My Essay Essay
Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a twisting story about a man who goes for a walk but not the typical walk that was excepted. Tables are turned, reality is lost, and the faith somewhere in between. In this intriguing story of confusion the theme conveyed in Young Goodman Brown by Hawthorne is the questioning of appearance vs. reality of faith. Hawthorne communicates his theme by using symbolism, characterization, and plot.
In the story Hawthorne uses symbolism to convey his theme by using the wife for a double meaning. In the story Brown goes for walk telling his wife that he'll be back soon but of course his wife, named Faith, tells him not to go. This shows how his wife named "Faith" telling him not to go is a double symbol of a nice wife not wanting her husband to leave but also as his faith/belief warning him not to go. Also the wife, Faith, wears pink ribbons in hair but by the end of his walk they disappear and drift off away, symbolizing another way faith was lost at end from the opposite of the beginning.
Hawthorne also uses characterization to convey his theme because with the main character he shows how his demeanor changes in contrast from the beginning of the story to the end of the story. In the beginning of the story Young Goodman Brown is a very light, heartful, and faithful man, coming off as very naive but at the end of the story, after the traumatic events from the late night walk, his character turns very cold. He becomes confused, heartless, depressed, and strangely unresponsive. This development of characterization shows how Hawthorne tries to convey his theme of appearance vs. reality because of the aftermath it left on Brown showed how in this case' "faith", isn't always as it seems.
Lastly, Hawthorne's plot of the story line portrays his theme of what the reality of faith is by creating drastically subtle turning points in the plot. For example, right away the reader is thrown right into the exposition without much explaining. We learn about our main characters and the strange objective of this story, but no further explanation which lures the readers in by causing interest of the unknown. As the story continues on, the plot thickens since the simple "walk" we were semi-expecting turns into a serious obstacle causing all reality to be lost and the confusion intensely applied. So with this roller-coaster of a plot it conveys the ups and downs of Hawthorne's theme that not everything is as it seems especially when it comes to faith.
In conclusion, Hawthorne effectively used symbolism, characterization, and plot to convey his theme of questioning the appearance or reality of faith because not only did these techniques bring to light his message but also made the story more intriguing and develop interest.
