Young Goodman Brown Questions
1) Hawthorne's purpose for writing this story was to questions ways of how faith/religion work. It brought to light the how even the most religious and faithful of people, humanity will always be tempted by the "dark side". It shows the characteristics of the "devil", temptation, and humanity by conveying an alternate world which would confuse/scare close-minded believers. So overall, Hawthorne's purpose to expose people to the realization that faith/religion is double-sided.
2) I agree when the author stated that Brown's wife was "aptly named Faith" because not only was she a real person in a situation that you need to have faith in a relationship for it to work but also religiously it displayed the duality of faith. I believe Faith's name fits her personality because she was an innocent yet weak representation of of faith. Therefore I don't believe brown has true faith in her because ultimately it wasn't strong enough to leave the temptations of the "devil"
3) I think the pink ribbons signify the "knot around faith". Like how tightly connected Brown is to his faith (both the wife and the belief)
4) I believe what Brown witnessed was all just a dream made by an evil imagination. For example, "But alas! it was a dream of evil omen for young Goodman Brown". This shows how even the author believes that what Brown "experienced" was all just a dream.
5) I think the old man is really the devil himself. I believe this because the whole time throughout the story as they were going on their walk, the way the "old man" spoke was just enticing to Goodman Brown without Brown realizing. Very similar to how the typical devil is described, his actions and characteristics are very evil like.
6) The staff represents the snake leading him into a trap of temptation and to make him go past the point of no return. However I don't believe the staff was the primary motivator as to why Brown kept following it because Brown's, whether he realized it or not, had already made his decision after he left for the walk in the first place, to go past the point of no return.
7) Yes I believe if Brown hadn't ventured into the forest his life wouldn't have changed, he would still have his wife Faith and trust the people of his community. I believe this because without this dramatic realization in his life, he would still be ignorantly oblivious to the alternate dark universe he lived in.
