Preview of Gatsby Essay

Gatsby's desire for success throughout this story is evidence of the obsession for this American dream. What Gatsby wanted was this American dream of being rich with a nice family and his perfect wife. This aspiration he had turned into an obsession as he went to the ends of the earth in order to gain his unrealistic American dream. His strange actions were all for the purpose of one women, who in the end didn't care that much for him, but he was determine to get her as he believed that they had true love and she was his soulmate. If you look back at everything Gatsby did once he got back home from the war it is almost saddening to see how he devoted his life to gain this American dream that without his life lost all purpose which is very similar to becoming a robot. Although he did become extremely wealthy that only got him so far because like they say "money can't buy love", well at least it shouldn't but in some cases it might. Therefore Gatsby symbolizes our culture today in society even if we don't want to acknowledge it. Now today in society sometimes we get so caught up in our desires no matter how outrageous they are because they become our reasons/purpose in life. So even though Gatsby may seem like an outlier with his actions and desires in reality they aren't so different from today it's just an exaggerated version that non of us want to admit that we can all find a way to relate.

Quotes (evidence):
"Gatsby sprang to his feet, vivid with excitement. 'She never loved you, do you hear?' he cried. 'She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me. It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart she never loved anyone except me!'"
