What's So Great About Gatsby?

1. I think Gatsby isn't really all that great nor is he even good. I believe Gatsby isn't that great because at the end of the day he was just a lonely man desperate to gain back the love and attention of woman he claimed to be in love with. So even though he wasn't "great" I still believed he had (for the most part) meant well even if it was purely for himself, because who can blame him we can all get like that sometimes. The only reason he gained this reputation of being "great" was because people gossiped him to be, without these rumors Gatsby would've been known as what he is, a hopeless romantic, with no other sole purpose than to get his loved one back.
2. For the most part, Nick is very honest with himself, as he understands his thoughts/feelings and is willing to accept them however his actions don't always abide by his honesty. I think Nick is constantly hanging out with dishonest people because people are attracted to his aura and whether Nick realizes it or not he is always attracted to the mystery behind the masks of people. For this Nick respects them and seeks out a relationship with them because a part of him feels/wishes to be like one. Though many might disagree, I think deep down inside a part of Nick wants to be like these dishonest people since he isn't like them.
3. I strongly agree with the description Fitzgerald gave about Tom and Daisy's relationship because their love is so toxic for one another and everyone else around them that the mess they make effects everyone like a nuclear weapon. When the author says "they were careless people"who "made a mess" then went back into their level of comfort zone with their vast money or vanity, leaving everyone else to pick up the after-mess. This is exactly what Daisy and Tom did in the story as Daisy allowed Gatsby to come back into her life just so she could toy with Gatsby and Tom at her own benefit and when things went down between her and Tom everyone else's lives had to pay cost like Myrtle, Wilson, and Gatsby for example who lost their lives in the mess of Tom and Daisy.
4. A part of me agrees that I understand Daisy's actions but for the most part I don't understand her decisions and I don't agree with the majority of the decisions. She is so indecisive as she led both men on to her and when the time came to make a decision she still didn't give a solid answer which is honestly so disappointing and annoying that I felt no sorrow or pity for her as she complained about her life because honestly she brought that on herself. If she was an actual person in my life I wouldn't let her date any of my close relationships in life as she doesn't deserve them nor do I want the people I care for suffering because of her.
5. The ending quote of "we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past" is really significant to the end of this book because it's almost like the moral of the story. What this quote is trying to tell us is that us, humanity, are always trying to change something that's out of our control, like how Gatsby in this story was trying to alter his past in order to have Daisy back completely to himself. However no matter how hard we push for what we want if we're going against the "currents" we will never truly reach our desire, therefore we shouldn't try to change the past but rather go with the "currents" and live in the present with the oncoming opportunities, which ties into the theme of this book.
